In two-way recording system accounting activities start with Journal. So to say, Journal is the first step of the Accounting Recording System.

So it is important for us to learn Journal Entries. In order to learn journal entries easily first of all we must have an idea about Accounting Equation.

An accounting Equation is a basic formula that shows that The Total assets of an organization always equals the Total liabilities.

The basic accounting equation formula is :

A=L+OE

Where A=Assets

L=Liabilities

OE=Owners Equity

One side action of the Formula always affects the other side. If there is an increase in assets that means there is an increase in Liabilities too. And a Decrease in Assets always causes a decrease in Liabilities.

For example, You brought in Cash to start your Business.

There is an increase in Cash (Assets) and also an increase in Capital (Owners Equity). Another Example, You took a loan from Bank. There is an increase in Cash(Assets) and Loan (Liabilities).

The extended form of the Accounting Equation is:

A=L+C+R-E-D

Where,

  • A=Assets
  • L=Liabilities
  • C=Capital
  • R=Revenue
  • E=Expenses
  • D=Drawings.
You can learn Accounting Equation in Bangla

How to Create a Journal Entry in Accounting

Accounting Equation always makes understanding Journal Entries easier. And, Second of all we must see the Effects of the transaction.

Some Transactions increase the Assets, Liabilities, Expenses etc and some decreases them. Then we must identify the two sides (Debit and Credit) of the transactions.

There is a chart of Debit and Credit for effects of a transaction.

Increase Decrease
Asset Debit Credit
Liabilities Credit Debit
Capital Credit Debit
Revenue Credit Debit
Expense/Drawings Debit Credit

Here are a few examples for your better understanding, I hope, you understand easily

Example 1:  Salary Expense 10000 tk.

Here, Salary is an Expense account for which the increase of Expense is Debit and Cash is An Asset for which the decrease of Asset is Credit.

So, You can write it like this:

Salary expense- Debit

Cash- Credit.

Example 2: Cash Sales 50000 tk.

Here Cash is an asset so as Cash increased it will be a Debit account.

And Sales is a Revenue for which increase of Sales will be Credit account.

Cash- Debit

Sales- Credit

You can try many other examples too.

How to Prepare a Journal

Create a Table for Journal

A Journal consists of five main Columns. They are:

  1. Date of the Transaction
  2. Account title and description and debit and credit side in a different line
  3. Column for Ledger page  No
  4. Debit amount
  5. Credit amount.

The table of the Journal is shown below:

how to create journal entry

Write a Journal Entry

We have already learnt a Journal consists of five columns, the next step is to prepare and write a Journal Entry. There are few steps you will have to follow:

  1. Select the transaction that occurred
  2. Identity the and effects of the transaction
  3. Write the date of the Transaction in the Journals Date Column
  4. Write the  Accounts Tittle and Particulars of the transaction. Also, write two sides (Debit side and Credit side) of the Transaction.
  5. Write the Ledger Page No in which the transaction is recorded in the Ledger book account.
  6. Write the Debit amount of the transaction.
  7. Write the Credit amount of the transaction.

In our daily life, so many objects or belongings that we see and use just come across are “round” in figure such as wheel, ball, coin, accessories (bangles, necklaces, earrings).

In common layman note, the round figure is often considered as a ‘Circle ‘. A circle is a close even figure. It is formed with the fusion of all those points that are equally outlying from a fixed point in the same figure. Only then It’s called a circle.

A circle can be described in other ways. It can be explained as the locus of a point moving in a plane but in a way so that it’s difference from a fixed dot or point is always constant. That fixed point is called center of the circle.

A circle has several parts and we have already discussed one of those which is center. Here is this picture ‘O’ is the center.

Parts of the Circle and their definitions

Here are the names of all parts-
  1. Center
  2. Radius
  3. Circumference
  4. Chord
  5. Diameter
  6. Arc
  7. Tangent
  8. Secant
  9. Segment
  10. Sector.
Let us learn more details with pictures and examples.

Centre

A circle has several parts and we have already discussed one of those which is Center.  Here is this picture ‘O’ is the Center.

Radius

Radius is the length of the line from the center to any point of the plane. The plural form is Radii (pronounced as ray-dee-eye). Here the purple line ‘R’ is a Radius.

radius part of the circle

Circumference

the distance around the circle can be defined as the circumference. Example -A 12cm rope is bent to be formed as a circle.  So here the circumference is the length of the rope,  i.e. 12 cm

Chord

A line segment meeting two different points on the circumference of a circle is called a Chord. A circle Doesn’t have any fixed number of chords. The diameter is the largest chord of a circle.

Arc

A part of a circumference in a circle is known as an arc. It’s a continuous piece of a circle. Here in this picture CBA is minor and CDA is the major arc.

arc part of the circle

Tangent

A line that touches the circle at a single point is called a Tangent. That very point is known as the point of tangency or the point of contact. In the picture, the orange line is the tangent of the circle.

radius part of the circle

Secant

It’s a line that intersects the circle at two distinct points and keeps an extension out of the circumference. In the picture, the orange line BC is the secant that intersects the circle twice.secant part of the circle

Segment

It’s the part of a circle that is surrounded by a chord and an arc is referred as a segment of a circle.  In the picture, the lower side of  AB is a minor segment and the upper side of AB is a major segment.

segment part of circle

Sector

the part of a circle that is bounded by two radii and an arc of a circle is known as a sector. In the picture the white part is minor and the black part is considered as a major sector where O is the Center.

How to draw a circle with a compass

Firstly to use it, insert the tip of a pencil or pen at the hole of your compass. Then draw a line as the same length as The radius of the circle you want to draw. It can be 3-6 cm if you want medium shaped circle.

Now rotate the compass holding its head strongly from the tip of your radius which eventually will be the centre of your circle.

Remember your pencil or pen should touch the paper perfectly so that you don’t need to rotate it again to get the visible circumference.

Drawing it on a single sheet won’t give a good result because that will keep moving. Instead of rotating your compass you can even just hold it and rotate your paper. Your circle will be drawn.

Here I have shown another example of describing graphs, especially for IELTS students. The Bar Charts below show the main reasons for the study among students of different age groups and the amount of support they received from employers.

We’ll summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant. See the charts in the picture.

describing graph reasons for study

The charts illustrate the intention for study between the students as well as the support of their employers by various ages.

Overall, in the first chart, it indicates a downward trend for career study and an upward trend for interest study by age growing. On the other chart, It reveals with a fluctuation, though the employer support has a downward trend, at last, it goes up again calmly with getting older.

In the first graph, nearly 80% of students under 26yr, study for their career. This percentage gradually declines by about 10-20% every decade. On average 18% of over 49yr olds are studying for career reasons.

On the other hand, it also shows the study for interest increases with age. There are only 10% off under 26yr. The percentage increases slowly till the 4th decade and increased dramatically in late adulthood.

However, 70% of over 49yr olds study for interest in comparison to 18% studying for career reasons in that age group. in the second graph, employers support approximately 60% for under 26yr students. It drops rapidly to around 34% up to the third decade of life and then increases in late adulthood up to about 44%.

It is unclear whether employer support is only for career focus study, but the highest level is for those students who are mainly studying for career purposes.
